Nicole Roberts Inspires as Pennsauken’s First Black Woman Mayor, Championing Community Growth and Empowerment

A Historic Moment for Pennsauken Township

Nicole Roberts made history as she was sworn in as Pennsauken’s first Black woman mayor. This milestone marked a proud moment for the racially diverse township. Roberts shared her excitement and gratitude ahead of the ceremony, saying, “I feel like… I’m ready.”

The swearing-in ceremony highlighted the progress Pennsauken has made in embracing diversity. While the township has had African American and women mayors in the past, Roberts is the first to hold both distinctions. Her journey to this achievement is as inspiring as the role she now holds.

A Leader with Deep Roots in the Community

Roberts’ connection to Pennsauken runs deep. A graduate of Pennsauken High School, she has spent her life contributing to her hometown. Before her political career, she worked in education for decades and raised four children with her high school sweetheart.

Her path to public service began when a former mayor encouraged her to engage with local governance. Roberts joined the Township Committee in 2020, becoming its first Black woman member. “I didn’t realize it until someone pointed it out. ‘You’re the first,’” she recalled.

Pioneering Roles and a Vision for the Future

In 2022, Roberts became the township’s first Black woman deputy mayor. That experience prepared her for her current role, where she’s focused on key issues like public safety and community development. She plans to expand parks and open spaces, ensuring all residents feel protected and valued.

Roberts emphasized her dedication to serving the people. “I want to make sure our residents feel protected, cared for, and that they have a voice,” she said. Her leadership reflects a commitment to building a stronger, more connected community.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders

Roberts hopes her historic achievement will encourage others to pursue leadership roles. “Hopefully, young women will look to me, not necessarily as a role model, but as someone they can aspire to,” she shared.

She believes her journey is proof that no dream is out of reach. “Never limit yourself,” she said. “You really can do anything!” With her message of empowerment, Roberts is not just leading Pennsauken; she’s inspiring a movement.
