Alexcia Cox Leads Florida’s 15th Judicial Circuit as First Black Woman State Attorney, Advocating Justice and Accountability

Alexcia Cox has stepped into the history books as Florida’s 15th Judicial Circuit’s first Black woman state attorney. On Monday, she was sworn in during a ceremony filled with pride and hope for the future. Chief Judge Glenn Kelley administered the oath of office, while retired Judge Krista Marx swore in all 112 Assistant State Attorneys under Cox’s leadership.

“I am not afraid of hard work or challenges,” Cox declared. Her words highlighted her readiness to lead an office committed to accountability and justice for all.

A Milestone for Leadership in Florida’s Legal System

Cox’s appointment marks a significant moment for diversity in leadership. She is both the first woman and the first Black person to serve as state attorney for the circuit.

Retired Judge Marx expressed her hopes for the future, saying, “I hope that there’s a day when a Black female takes a position of this significance and it’s seen as ordinary.” She acknowledged, however, the extraordinary nature of this moment. For Florida, this change signals progress in making leadership roles more inclusive and representative.

Cox won the position by a narrow margin, defeating her Republican opponent, Sam Stern, by less than 5,300 votes. Her victory represents the trust voters have in her ability to lead with integrity.

Focusing on Justice and Public Safety

As state attorney, Cox aims to prioritize justice, fairness, and safety in her community. Her plans include working closely with law enforcement and community stakeholders to create safer neighborhoods.

“We get to continue standing up for victims,” Cox shared during her speech. She emphasized holding offenders accountable and ensuring that victims feel supported. Her leadership promises a balanced approach to justice—focused on protecting residents and strengthening trust in the legal system.

From Challenges to Triumphs

Cox’s journey to this position has not been easy, but she remains steadfast. Reflecting on her past, she noted the challenges she has overcome and how they have prepared her for the responsibility ahead.

Her determination shines through her words: “If you know me or what I’ve been through, you know I’m ready for this.” Cox’s resilience inspires others, proving that hard work and perseverance can lead to extraordinary achievements.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders

Alexcia Cox’s historic role paves the way for future leaders who may have never seen themselves in such positions. By breaking through these boundaries, she becomes a symbol of possibility for women and people of color.

Her leadership shows that representation matters. For the residents of the 15th Judicial Circuit, Cox’s appointment is not only a victory for justice but a moment of inspiration for generations to come.
