Alexandria, Virginia, has made a significant step toward a more inclusive future with the swearing-in of Alyia Gaskins as the city’s first Black woman mayor. This momentous event, held on Thursday, marks a new chapter for the city and its leadership. Gaskins, who previously served on the Alexandria City Council for four years, expressed both joy and a deep sense of responsibility in her new role.
“I feel deep joy but also just deep humility and a sense of responsibility,” Gaskins shared after the ceremony. Her vision for the city involves addressing key issues that matter most to the residents—public safety, flooding, and affordability.
Tackling Public Safety and Flood Mitigation
One of Gaskins’ top priorities as mayor is improving public safety. Her experience in public health and city planning will guide her approach to creating safer communities. “When you see someone in need, you help them. And when you see a problem, you fix it,” she said. She has learned from her upbringing, where her mother worked tirelessly to support the family, and she plans to apply that work ethic to her leadership.
Another pressing concern for Gaskins is flood mitigation. Alexandria has faced challenges with flooding in recent years, and Gaskins intends to tackle these issues head-on. She has emphasized the importance of preparing the city for climate change impacts while ensuring that infrastructure investments are made wisely.
Affordable Housing and Making Government Accessible
Affordability is a significant focus for Gaskins. Housing in Alexandria has become increasingly expensive, and many residents struggle to find affordable living options. As mayor, Gaskins aims to make sure the city’s growth does not leave its residents behind. “I want to make sure our community can continue to thrive and that families have access to affordable housing,” she stated.
In addition to her work on affordability, Gaskins is determined to make city government more accessible to everyone. She plans to implement initiatives like a youth council, vote trackers, and citizen advocates to increase public engagement and ensure that every voice is heard. These steps reflect her belief in creating a more inclusive and transparent political system.
Navigating Alexandria’s Complex Past
Gaskins also recognizes the city’s complex history, particularly its role in the 1800s as one of the largest slave-trading centers in the country. This historical context weighs heavily on her, but it also motivates her to lead in a way that honors the struggles and progress of past generations. “I know our city’s history, and I just want to make sure that I deliver for our community, for my ancestors, and for just every hope and dream we’ve had in our city for young Black women like me,” Gaskins remarked.
With her vision for the future and respect for the past, Gaskins is set to bring meaningful change to Alexandria. Her leadership is expected to have a lasting impact on the city’s growth, inclusivity, and overall well-being.
