Yemi Mobolade made history in 2023 by becoming the first Black mayor of Colorado Springs. A Breakthrough Election
In March 2022, Mobolade decided to run for mayor after resigning from his role as small business administrator for the city. His candidacy stood out from the start. In the primary election, Mobolade came out on top of twelve candidates, securing 29% of the vote. He then faced Republican Wayne W. Williams in a runoff election. Despite the city’s conservative leanings, Mobolade won with 57% of the vote, earning widespread support for his inclusive vision.
Mobolade’s victory was more than just a political win. It represented a shift in the city’s political landscape, where residents were eager for a change in leadership that reflected their diverse values. His win as an Independent was groundbreaking, demonstrating that voters were looking beyond party affiliations in favor of strong leadership and fresh perspectives.
A Deep Commitment to the Community
Before stepping into politics, Mobolade was deeply involved in his community. After moving to Colorado Springs in 2010, he started a church and became an influential figure in the local community. His passion for service led him to cofound the nonprofit organization COSILoveYou, which brought together more than 100 local churches to work on community outreach projects.
In addition to his work in faith-based organizations, Mobolade also made his mark as an entrepreneur. He invested in the Wild Goose Meeting House, a downtown café, and cofounded the Good Neighbors Meeting House, another community-focused initiative. His business ventures were driven by a desire to connect with people and create spaces for dialogue, collaboration, and mutual support.

Mobolade’s journey to mayor was also shaped by his professional career. He has an impressive educational background, earning degrees in Business Administration, Management, and Divinity. His work as Vice President of Business Retention and Expansion at the Colorado Springs Chamber & Economic Development Corporation allowed him to assist local businesses in growing and thriving. This role was key in creating a foundation for his future political career, as it enabled him to build relationships with local entrepreneurs and leaders, paving the way for his successful run for mayor.
