In 2021, after over 30 years in state government, Justice Melton announced his resignation. He stepped down as Chief Justice of Georgia’s Supreme Court to spend more time with his family. His decision to leave the bench came with one year remaining in his term, allowing Governor Brian Kemp to appoint a new justice.
Despite stepping down from the court, Melton’s legacy in Georgia’s legal community remains strong. In 2020, Auburn University, where Melton made history as the first Black president of the Student Government Association, renamed a student center in his honor.
