Willie Simmons has made history at Florida International University (FIU) as the school’s first-ever non-interim Black head football coach. His appointment, announced on December 9, 2024, signals a new chapter for the FIU Panthers as Simmons sets his sights on building a winning football program. While aware of the historic nature of his position, Simmons is more focused on the task ahead: turning FIU into a contender.
A Landmark Achievement for FIU and College Football
Simmons, 44, is no stranger to overcoming challenges. Despite the significance of his role as the first Black head coach at FIU, he remains humble. “It still shocks me that in 2024 — about to be 2025 — that we’re still saying first African-American or Latino doing things,” Simmons shared. “It shows how much more work we have to do collectively as a nation to truly have equality.” His sentiment reflects the broader issue of diversity and inclusion in college sports, particularly in leadership roles.
However, Simmons is quick to acknowledge the importance of his new role. “I’m excited about the opportunity to lead,” he said. “I’ve gotten a lot of calls from minority coaches, saying how proud they are that I got this opportunity.” Simmons recognizes that opportunities for Black head coaches in football are limited, with only around 14 or 15 Black head football coaches nationwide. “When we get these opportunities, we have to make the most of them,” he added.
Simmons’ Impressive Track Record as a Coach
Before landing at FIU, Simmons built a strong coaching resume. His previous stops include Prairie View A&M and Florida A&M, where he achieved remarkable success. In his eight years as a head coach, Simmons boasts an overall record of 66-24, with a conference record of 51-11. Unlike many coaches, Simmons has never had a losing season, making his appointment at FIU even more promising.
His track record speaks to his ability to build and sustain successful programs. As he steps into the FIU role, he faces the challenge of revitalizing a team that has struggled with six consecutive losing seasons. Yet, Simmons is confident. “They want to win,” he said of his new players. “And they want to know that the person leading them has a pedigree of winning.” Simmons’ experience in fostering winning teams will be invaluable as he works to guide the Panthers to success.
The Road Ahead: Building Relationships and Recruiting Talent
One of the first challenges Simmons faces at FIU is securing a strong coaching staff and keeping key players. Some top players, including quarterback Keyone Jenkins and record-breaking wide receiver Eric Rivers, have entered the transfer portal following the firing of previous head coach Mike MacIntyre. Simmons, however, is optimistic about retaining these stars. He believes the key to keeping players lies in building strong, genuine relationships.
“We want young men who want to come to FIU because they feel this is the best program to develop them as young men,” Simmons explained. He stressed that the coaching staff must recruit players who prioritize personal and athletic development over financial incentives like NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals.
Simmons’ Vision for FIU: Creating a Winning Culture
In addition to recruiting, Simmons is determined to foster a culture of success at FIU. His leadership style is centered on integrity, hard work, and accountability. As the team’s new head coach, Simmons will work to instill these values in his players. His ultimate goal is to turn FIU into a program that consistently competes at a high level, ultimately bringing the Panthers back to championship contention.
Simmons’ confidence and vision offer hope to both the team and the university. With his track record of success, FIU fans can expect a fresh, winning mindset under Simmons’ leadership. As he focuses on rebuilding the team and creating a competitive culture, Simmons remains committed to his ultimate goal: making the Panthers winners once again.
