Command Sergeant Major Corey A. Thompson has stepped into history as the first Black man to serve as the top non-commissioned officer (NCO) of the 99th Readiness Division at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. His leadership covers the U.S. Army Reserve’s northeastern region, a significant role he embraced last month.
When asked about his groundbreaking achievement, Thompson humbly said, “Color doesn’t matter.” For him, the focus lies on strong leadership, teamwork, and fostering a culture of excellence.
A Legacy of Service and Dedication
Thompson’s journey in the military spans 35 years, starting in 1989 through the delayed entry program. Over the decades, he has served during pivotal military campaigns, including Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
His extensive experience also includes deployments in Iraq supporting Operation Noble Eagle and the Global War on Terrorism. These roles built his reputation as a dedicated and skilled leader in both combat and peacetime operations.
A Vision of Leadership at the 99th Readiness Division
Now in his current role, Thompson oversees over 51,000 reserve soldiers spread across 13 states and the District of Columbia. The 99th Readiness Division operates 454 reserve units and manages 332 reserve facilities along with 33 maintenance facilities.
Thompson describes the opportunity to lead as “an honor and a privilege.” He emphasizes the importance of his team, stating, “The people are the most valuable resource we have in the military.”
Recognizing Those Who Came Before
Despite his historic achievement, Thompson does not see himself as a trailblazer. He acknowledges those who paved the way, including Command Sergeant Major Subretta Pompey, the first woman and African American to hold the same position in 2022.
His humility reflects his deep respect for the leaders who inspired him and the soldiers he now leads. “I don’t take this position lightly,” Thompson shared, underscoring his commitment to service.
A Leader Focused on Team Excellence
Thompson believes in empowering his soldiers and fostering unity within his team. His approach to leadership prioritizes collaboration, energy, and a commitment to high standards.
Describing his role, Thompson said, “It’s about being the best athlete on the field.” His passion for service shines as he eagerly steps into this challenging and meaningful position.
