Albany Technical College has announced a tribute to Dr. Walter Carl Gordon Jr., the first Black surgeon at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. A surgical technology lab at Albany Tech’s Healthcare Technology Building will now bear his name. This dedication celebrates Dr. Gordon’s profound contributions to medicine and the Albany community.
The ceremony, scheduled for Nov. 19 at 10 a.m., will feature heartfelt tributes from Dr. Gordon’s family, colleagues, and local leaders. Albany Technical College President Dr. Emmet Griswold highlighted his impact, stating, “His legacy will continue to inspire future healthcare professionals.”

Speakers at the dedication will include Dr. Leon Dent, Trauma Surgeon and Medical Director at Phoebe, and Dr. Willie Adams, a longtime friend and colleague. Javian Johnson, Dr. Gordon’s grandson, will also share personal insights.

Previous Recognition of Dr. Gordon
Dr. Gordon passed away in 2008 from heart complications. In 2009, the main post office on South Slappey Boulevard in Albany was named in his honor. This recognition solidified his status as a local hero.
