Quintin Middleton has made history by opening Middleton Made Knives in North Charleston, establishing the first Black-owned knife shop in the country. His journey from childhood enthusiasm to master craftsman showcases determination, skill, and community spirit.
From Childhood Dreams to Master Craftsman
Middleton’s passion for blade-making began in his youth, inspired by cartoons and childhood play. “I wanted to make a sword or make a knife and be like He-Man or Star Wars,” Middleton recalled with a laugh.
His mother’s insistence on kitchen skills laid the foundation for his future craft. “My mom has four boys. She said, ‘You not going anywhere unless you know how to cook, bake,’” he shared.
Crafting Excellence Through Dedication and Mentorship
Each custom-made knife requires between four to eight hours of meticulous crafting at Middleton’s home workshop in St. Stephen. His journey to mastery was guided by a mentor who recognized his determination and potential.
“He saw my determination about learning the craft. He always said if you’re serious, I’m serious,” Middleton explained, emphasizing the importance of mentorship in his development.
Faith-Driven Entrepreneurship and Community Impact
Middleton’s business approach combines entrepreneurial spirit with deep faith. “Any time I do any big business, anytime even opening this store, I had to pray. I said, ‘God show me where you need me to go,’” he shared.
His vision extends beyond craftsmanship to community development. “My big motto for this season is each one, lift one,” Middleton stated, expressing his commitment to inspiring others and creating local job opportunities.
