Delcambre Welcomes Perry Shaw as First Black Police Chief, Pledging Safety, Unity, and Community Growth

Delcambre, Louisiana, celebrates a historic moment as Perry Shaw steps into his role as the town’s first Black police chief. Shaw, who brings 30 years of law enforcement experience, was elected to the position in November, marking a significant shift in Delcambre’s leadership. Residents are optimistic about Shaw’s plans for safety, unity, and community-focused progress.

Shaw’s Vision for Safety and Community Protection

As the new police chief, Shaw has promised to prioritize public safety and quality of life for Delcambre’s residents. He plans to work closely with other departments, including the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office. This collaboration will provide valuable resources to Delcambre, helping to ensure a safe and well-protected community.

Shaw also plans to implement school resource officers in local schools. “I think it’s going to benefit the school and protect the kids while they are in school,” he explained, emphasizing his commitment to keeping young people safe.

A New Chapter in Delcambre’s Law Enforcement

Shaw succeeds Chief James Broussard, who served Delcambre for over 30 years. This transition marks a new chapter in the town’s law enforcement history. Shaw expressed deep gratitude for the community’s support and trust in him to lead. “I’m very appreciative that the community came out and decided that they wanted change and selected me as the next chief of police,” he said.

Though he recognizes the honor of being Delcambre’s first Black police chief, Shaw aims to focus on fairness, integrity, and community relations. “It’s a lot more than just being a Black chief of police. It’s how you can relate to the public and being fair with the public in every aspect of that job,” he said. Shaw believes in a clear standard of “right is right and wrong is wrong” and is dedicated to upholding these values.

Shaw’s Extensive Background in Law Enforcement

Shaw’s law enforcement career began in 1995 with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office. Over the years, he has held various roles, gaining experience in multiple aspects of police work. He served as a lieutenant in charge of patrol and spent six years in the narcotics division, focusing on drug enforcement.

Shaw also gained experience in fleet management and hazardous material handling with the state police. This broad skill set has prepared him to lead Delcambre’s police department effectively. His knowledge of local issues and understanding of the law enforcement landscape will serve Delcambre well in the coming years.

Building Unity and Strengthening the Department

For Shaw, keeping the police department united and focused is crucial. He recognizes the challenges of working with a short-staffed team and values the importance of collaboration and morale. “Everybody’s so shorthanded. You don’t want to go in and clean the house. You want to try to work with what you have now,” Shaw shared, reflecting his commitment to teamwork and strengthening his team.

Shaw encourages Delcambre’s residents to reach out to him directly if they have questions or concerns. He is dedicated to addressing the community’s needs while staying within the law’s limits. “I want to know your concern, and we’re going to work toward it,” he said, underscoring his open-door policy and eagerness to connect with the community.

A Bright Future for Delcambre Under Shaw’s Leadership

Shaw’s historic election has energized Delcambre, and residents are looking forward to a future focused on unity, safety, and growth. As the town’s first Black police chief, Shaw brings not only experience but also a vision for a more connected and resilient community. His emphasis on fairness, collaboration, and active engagement with residents is set to make a positive impact on Delcambre for years to come.
