The eyewear industry has a new player that’s shaking things up. Co-founders Address and Nancy have launched the Extraordinaires Von Tell, the first Black-owned women’s eyewear company.
This groundbreaking venture aims to blend fashion with function, offering unique designs that cater to diverse facial features.
A Vision Born from Frustration
The journey began in 2019 when one of the co-founders lost an expensive pair of glasses. “When you lose them, you just go crazy,” she recalls. The search for a replacement led to a disappointing discovery. Most available options were too tight, rested uncomfortably on her cheeks, and looked boring.
This frustration sparked an idea. The co-founder called her best friend from college, sharing her dilemma. Together, they decided to take action. Their solution? A trip to Paris.
From Paris to Pioneering: The Birth of Extraordinaires Von Tell
Paris wasn’t just a vacation destination. It was home to a major eyewear expo. The duo spent three days exploring the event. They quickly realized why glasses often hurt and don’t fit properly. More importantly, they noticed a glaring absence.
“No one looks like us,” they observed. This realization fueled their mission. They decided to create glasses tailored for diverse facial features. Their goal was to make eyewear that’s both comfortable and stylish.
Cultural Heritage Meets Modern Design
Extraordinaires Von Tell isn’t just about fit. It’s a celebration of culture and identity. The designs pay homage to African and Black accessories. This unique approach sets them apart in the eyewear market.
One of the co-founders, with Caribbean roots, wanted to infuse this heritage into their products. “We wanted something that represented the African, Caribbean and diaspora,” she explains. The result is a line of glasses that’s rich in cultural significance and contemporary style.
Beyond Fashion: A Vision for Social Impact
The company’s mission extends beyond selling eyewear. They’ve partnered with Women in Need, a shelter system in New York. Through this collaboration, they provide glasses to those who can’t afford them.
“We know that you perform better when you see,” says one of the co-founders. This initiative underscores their commitment to making a difference in people’s lives through better vision.
