The Norwich Research Park is gearing up for its inaugural Black Health and Research Conference on October 23. This significant event is part of the UK Black History Month celebrations and will take place at the Benjamin Gooch Lecture Theatre at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH).
The conference aims to shine a light on pressing healthcare inequalities faced by Black communities. The event is organized by the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic campus representatives group, established by Anglia Innovation Partnership. It promises to be a vital platform for discussions and insights into various health challenges.
Addressing Inequalities in Healthcare Access
Healthcare access remains a critical issue for many communities in the UK. At the conference, experts will discuss significant inequalities, especially in maternal health and mental health care. For instance, research indicates that Black women are five times more likely to experience severe complications during childbirth than their white counterparts.
Roberta Hook, deputy chief operating officer at NNUH and chairwoman of the NNUH Together Staff Network, expressed her excitement about the conference. She stated, “I’m thrilled that we are hosting this conference, which is supported by Norwich Research Park and includes incredible speakers.” The focus on maternal health is particularly urgent, given the alarming statistics surrounding Black women’s experiences in healthcare.
A Focus on Mental Health Challenges
Mental health is another critical area of discussion at the conference. Studies show that Black individuals are less likely to seek treatment for mental health issues. However, they are more frequently detained under the Mental Health Act. This discrepancy highlights the need for tailored approaches to mental health services that are sensitive to cultural differences.
Roz Bird, CEO of Anglia Innovation Partnership, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in health research. She said, “That is why it is so important that we do whatever we can to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute to the fabulous research that is undertaken here at Norwich Research Park.”
