Clayton Stephenson, First Black Van Cliburn Finalist, to Open 99th Concert Year with Inspirational Performance

Clayton Stephenson, a rising star in the classical music world, is set to kick off the Fredericksburg Music Club’s 99th concert year. This talented pianist made history as the first Black finalist in the prestigious Van Cliburn Piano Competition in 2022.

A Groundbreaking Performance in Fredericksburg

Stephenson’s performance is scheduled for Sunday, September 15, at 3 p.m. The concert will take place in the sanctuary of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church. Doors open at 2:30 p.m., with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.

While the performance is free, attendees are welcome to make goodwill offerings. The Texas Commission on the Arts and Fredericksburg Music Club members are partially funding this event.

From New York Streets to International Stages

Stephenson’s journey to musical excellence is truly inspiring. He began piano lessons at age 7 in New York City. The following year, he joined The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program on a full scholarship.

For six years, Stephenson practiced on an old upright piano found on the street. At 17, the Lang Lang Foundation donated a new piano to him. This gift marked a turning point in his musical journey.

Community Support: The Cornerstone of Stephenson’s Success

Stephenson credits various community programs for his musical growth. “The Third Street Music School jump-started my music education,” he says. He also mentions the Young People’s Choir, Juilliard’s programs, and the Lang Lang Foundation as crucial influences.

These programs not only honed his skills but also boosted his confidence. Stephenson notes, “The Lang Lang Foundation brought me to stages worldwide and transformed me from a piano student to a young artist.”

Academic Excellence Meets Musical Talent

In spring 2023, Stephenson graduated from the Harvard-New England Conservatory dual degree program. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard and a master’s in piano performance from NEC.

His academic achievements complement an impressive list of musical honors. These include being named a 2022 Gilmore Young Artist and a 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts.

A Diverse Repertoire for Fredericksburg

Stephenson’s Fredericksburg performance promises to be a treat for music lovers. His program includes works by Beethoven, Bach, Scarlatti, and Gershwin. Gramophone has praised him for his “extraordinary narrative and poetic gifts” and interpretations that are “fresh, incisive and characterfully alive.”

This concert offers a unique opportunity to witness a rising star in classical music. Stephenson’s performance is sure to inspire and captivate the audience, marking a memorable start to the Fredericksburg Music Club’s 99th year.
