Baltimore County is about to make history. Joseph W. Dixon has been nominated as the next chief of the Baltimore County Fire Department. If approved, he will become the county’s first Black fire chief.
Historic Nomination Marks New Era for Baltimore County Fire Department
County Executive Johnny Olszewski announced Dixon’s nomination on Tuesday morning. Dixon brings more than 30 years of firefighting and emergency response experience to the role.
Olszewski stated, “Keeping our communities safe is among the most sacred responsibilities of local government.” He added, “I look forward to Chief Dixon getting started in this position and carrying on the department’s legacy of excellence.”
Joseph Dixon: A Career Built on Service and Leadership
Dixon’s firefighting journey began in Howard County. He served there for nearly 25 years, climbing the ranks. His roles included assistant fire/EMS chief, public information officer, and battalion chief.
After leaving Howard County in 2018, Dixon led fire departments in Goldsboro, N.C., and Gainesville, Florida. He recently resigned from his position in Gainesville to take on this new challenge.
Expert Praise and High Expectations for New Leadership
John Butler, fire chief of Virginia’s Fairfax County Fire Department, praised Dixon’s appointment. He said:
“Joseph Dixon is a highly respected and proven leader who has consistently demonstrated his commitment to the fire service community and all those he serves.”
Butler added:
“His dedication to excellence as well as his exceptional mentorship leadership skills make him an ideal choice to lead the Baltimore County Fire Department.”
Breaking Barriers and Continuing a Legacy of Diversity
Dixon’s nomination follows another historic appointment. He will replace Joanne Rund, who made history as the department’s first permanently appointed female chief. Rund began her tenure in 2019 and retired in July.
Dixon expressed his gratitude for the opportunity. He stated, “I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve as the next leader for the Baltimore County Fire Department.”
Next Steps: Confirmation Process and Department Transition
Dixon’s appointment is not yet final. The County Council must approve his nomination through a confirmation vote. If confirmed, Dixon will take over from Interim Chief Scott Ebbert.
Ebbert briefly led the department after Rund’s retirement. He will return to his previous role as assistant fire chief once Dixon takes the helm.
Olszewski thanked Ebbert for his service during the transition. He said, “We are deeply grateful for his dedication to the people of Baltimore County.”
