Earle-Sears Launches Historic Virginia Governor Bid

Winsome Earle-Sears Sets Sights on Becoming Virginia’s First Female Governor and the Nation’s First Black Woman to Hold the Office

Virginia’s Republican Lieutenant Governor, Winsome Earle-Sears, has thrown her hat into the ring for the 2025 gubernatorial race.

Her announcement on Thursday marks a historic moment in American politics. If successful, Earle-Sears would become not only Virginia’s first woman governor but also the first Black woman to lead any state in the nation.

A Groundbreaking Candidacy in Virginia’s Political Landscape

Earle-Sears, 60, acknowledged the significance of her run in her campaign announcement. She stated, “Yes, this is an opportunity to make history, but our campaign is about making life better for every Virginian right here, right now.”

The lieutenant governor’s bid comes after nearly three years of working alongside Governor Glenn Youngkin. During this time, she claims to have helped steer Virginia “back on course toward prosperity.”

From Jamaican Immigrant to Marine Veteran: Earle-Sears’ Unique Background

Winsome Earle-Sears brings a diverse set of experiences to her gubernatorial campaign. She immigrated to the United States from Jamaica at age 6, following her father who arrived with just $1.75 in his pocket.

Her background includes service as a Marine, a term in Virginia’s House of Delegates, and business ownership. Earle-Sears often speaks of her journey as living the American dream.

A Conservative Voice with a Charismatic Style

Known for her unfiltered approach, Earle-Sears has gained a loyal following since winning statewide office in 2021. Her memorable moments include gaveling the state Senate into session with a high-heeled shoe.

Political analyst Bob Holsworth describes her as “a unique character with strong appeal to the Republican base.” He predicts a lively campaign, noting that Earle-Sears is likely to “say what she wants, say what she means.”

Potential Challenges and Competition in the GOP Primary

Despite her popularity, Earle-Sears may face competition for the Republican nomination. Attorney General Jason S. Miyares is widely rumored to be considering a run.

Miyares released a statement seemingly criticizing Earle-Sears’ early announcement. He urged focus on this November’s elections “before even thinking about next year.”

The Road Ahead: Facing Democratic Opposition

Should Earle-Sears secure the GOP nomination, she will likely face Rep. Abigail Spanberger in the November 2025 general election. Spanberger is currently the only declared Democratic candidate for governor.

Regardless of the outcome, Virginia seems poised to make history. As Holsworth notes, “If she obtains the nomination, Virginia’s guaranteed its first woman governor.”
