Historic Leadership in Women’s Lacrosse
Annabelle Akintoye is making waves in the world of lacrosse as she becomes the first Black woman to captain an England team at a major tournament. Akintoye’s groundbreaking role will debut at the 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships, set to be held from September 20 to 29 in Utica, New York. This event marks the inaugural Women’s Box World Championship, running alongside the sixth edition of the men’s competition.
Akintoye’s appointment as captain signifies a major milestone not only for her but also for the sport of lacrosse in England. “It is an absolute honor and a privilege to not only be part of the inaugural women’s World Lacrosse Box Championships, but also to go as the first Black woman to captain an England Lacrosse team in any format,” Akintoye shared. Her leadership is a testament to her exceptional skills and dedication to the game.
Trailblazing Career and Achievements
Annabelle Akintoye’s journey in lacrosse began at Queen Anne’s School at the age of 11. Her passion for the sport led her to Swansea University and later to the University of York, where she continued to excel. In 2020, she transitioned to club lacrosse with Spencer and then moved to Camden Capybaras. At Camden, she captained the team for the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons and now holds the position of Vice Chair for the 2024/25 season.
Akintoye’s impact extends beyond her club achievements. She has been a key player for England since the initial 44-player training squad was announced last November. During the ShE-Box event in April, she played in three matches before an injury. Despite this setback, she contributed significantly to England’s success, helping the team secure four wins out of five games.
Preparing for the World Championship
With the World Lacrosse Box Championships fast approaching, Akintoye is focused and excited about the upcoming tournament.
Her enthusiasm is evident as she prepares to lead England against teams like Hong Kong, China in their opening match. Akintoye will be supported by captain alternates Laura Beaman and Lucy Ford, who will assist her in guiding the team through this historic competition.
