Transport for Wales Celebrates Groundbreaking Diversity on the Rails

Transport for Wales Celebrates Its First All-Black, All-Female Train Crew, Paving the Way for Diversity on the Rails

Groundbreaking Achievements Inspire Change

Transport for Wales has celebrated a historic milestone, as two of its employees, Jamilla Fletcher and Danielle Adams, became the company’s first all-Black, all-female train crew.

This remarkable achievement not only showcases the railway’s commitment to diversity and inclusion but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for individuals from underrepresented communities to join the industry.

Overcoming Barriers, Embracing Opportunities

Jamilla, who initially joined Transport for Wales as a dispatcher in Newport, and Danielle, who worked her way up from the catering team to become a train manager, both had impressive career trajectories before joining the railway.

Their shared experiences as former cabin crew with Virgin and EasyJet, as well as their time in the NHS, have helped them navigate the challenges of the industry and excel in their roles.

Fostering a Welcoming and Inclusive Environment

Both Jamilla and Danielle have expressed their appreciation for the welcoming and supportive environment at Transport for Wales. Danielle, hailing from Cardiff, remarked, “I’ve felt really proud working here and what I’ve achieved.”

The company’s commitment to diversity is further evidenced by its recent signing of the Zero Racism Wales pledge, underscoring its dedication to creating a more inclusive workplace.

Driving Positive Change through Targeted Initiatives

To address the lack of racial diversity within its workforce, Transport for Wales has implemented a range of initiatives.

These include providing career options to underrepresented groups through advertising and outreach, building relationships with multicultural organizations, and working with schools to increase the uptake of apprenticeship opportunities from ethnic minority communities.

Additionally, the company has implemented mandatory hiring manager training to address unconscious biases and is continuously reviewing its Pathways Programmes to ensure they continue to support underrepresented communities.

A Pathway to a Diverse and Inclusive Future

The success of Jamilla and Danielle’s journey serves as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of diversity and inclusion within the railway industry.
