Tiffani Lee, J.D. ’97, has broken new ground as the first Black deputy managing partner at Holland & Knight. Her journey from rural Florida to a leadership role at a global law firm is a testament to resilience and determination.
From Farm to Law: A Journey Inspired by Injustice
Lee’s path to law began on a farm in rural Florida. As one of eight children, she witnessed her father’s struggle against racial discrimination at work. James D. Lee, Sr.’s years-long legal battle left a lasting impression on young Tiffani.
“For my dad to have won a complete victory, it must’ve been a compelling case,” Lee reflected. “If he had had a lawyer that whole time, it probably wouldn’t have taken so long.” This experience planted the seed for her future career in law.
Overcoming Challenges at Miami Law School
In 1994, Lee enrolled at the University of Miami School of Law. She was part of the largest incoming class of Black law students at the time. However, this milestone was met with controversy and challenges to their qualifications.
Undeterred, Lee channeled these challenges into motivation. “I was much more motivated to demonstrate that I was rightfully there,” she said. Lee excelled, becoming president of the Honor Council and writing editor for the University of Miami Law Review.
Rising Through the Ranks at Holland & Knight
Lee joined Holland & Knight as a full-time associate in 1997. Her early mentorship by firm co-founder Chesterfield Smith proved invaluable. “That early mentorship and sponsorship by the founder of the firm set me up for success,” Lee acknowledged.
Over her 26-year career at Holland & Knight, Lee has specialized in complex commercial litigation. Her dedication and skill have earned her numerous recognitions, including being named in South Florida Business Journal’s Top 40 under 40.
Championing Diversity and Giving Back
Lee’s commitment extends beyond her legal practice. She has led diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at Holland & Knight. Additionally, she provides pro bono representation to foster children and homeless individuals.
“I was the first in my family to go to law school and benefitted from several great mentors,” Lee said. “I feel obligated to pay it forward.” She actively mentors law students and young attorneys.
A Legacy of Progress and Success
Looking back at her alma mater, Lee is proud of the progress made in diversity. The percentage of entering students of color has risen from 27% in 1993 to 55% in 2023.
As she prepares to assume her role as deputy managing partner in April 2024, Lee reflects on her journey. “Sometimes success is the sweetest revenge,” she says, addressing those who once questioned her place in law school.
Tiffani Lee’s story is one of perseverance, excellence, and commitment to positive change. From witnessing her father’s fight for justice to becoming a leader in one of the world’s largest law firms, Lee continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations of diverse legal professionals.
