As Michigan celebrates Women’s Equality Day on August 26, 2024, Justice Kyra Harris Bolden stands as a living testament to progress. Bolden, the first Black woman to serve on the Michigan Supreme Court, reflects on her groundbreaking role and its impact on future generations.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed August 26 as Women’s Equality Day, marking the 104th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. This celebration highlights the ongoing fight for women’s rights and representation in Michigan.
Breaking Barriers in Michigan’s Judicial System
Justice Bolden’s appointment to the Michigan Supreme Court in its 188-year history is truly groundbreaking. Her presence on the bench represents a significant step towards diversity in the state’s highest court.
“I feel the weight of that milestone because I know personally of the pain and sacrifice of our ancestors,” Bolden stated. She added, “But I also bear it with great pride in knowing I can inspire a new generation, especially young Black women, to achieve something they never thought possible.”
Women’s Leadership in Michigan Politics
Justice Bolden isn’t alone in breaking barriers. Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, the first woman to hold this position in Michigan, also shared her thoughts on Women’s Equality Day.
Brinks emphasized the importance of representation, saying, “When young girls grow up seeing themselves reflected in positions of influence, we are laying the groundwork for a future where women in leadership is the norm.”
Governor Whitmer’s Commitment to Women’s Rights
Governor Whitmer has been a staunch advocate for women’s rights throughout her career. Her efforts include protecting reproductive freedoms, expanding access to affordable childcare, and creating economic opportunities for women.
“Women’s Equality Day is an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate how far we’ve come in the fight for women’s rights,” Governor Whitmer stated. She added, “Together, let’s honor our past and look forward to a future where our daughters can not just live, but thrive.”
Advancing Women’s Equality in Michigan
Under Governor Whitmer’s leadership, Michigan has made significant strides in advancing women’s rights. Recent achievements include signing the Reproductive Health Act, expanding access to affordable childcare, and repealing the tax on essential menstrual products.
The governor has also prioritized diverse representation in her appointments. Sixty percent of her appointees are women or people of color, making her cabinet the most diverse in Michigan history.
