Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, Benedict College’s First Black Female President, Secures Historic Contract Extension to Lead HBCU’s Future

A Trailblazing Leader for Benedict College

In a historic move, Benedict College has extended the contract of its first female president, Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, solidifying her leadership through June 2031. Artis, who began her tenure in 2017, has already made significant strides in guiding the South Carolina HBCU to new heights.

Under Artis’ guidance, Benedict College completed its “The B.E.S.T.” five-year strategic plan within just three years, a testament to her visionary leadership. Now, she will continue to play a critical role in shaping the institution’s future through the implementation of the ambitious B2 plan.

Artis’ Bold Vision for Benedict’s Future

The B2 plan, titled “Focus on the F.U.T.U.R.E.,” represents a bold vision for Benedict College. Artis has outlined a comprehensive strategy that goes beyond a simple to-do list, instead reflecting the very essence of the institution and defining its path forward.

At the heart of the plan are initiatives to build a more inclusive campus, boost student engagement, and ensure academic programs provide the necessary tools for students’ future success. Additionally, the college will focus on elevating its campus facilities and resources to better serve its community.

Celebrating Benedict’s Legacy as a Woman-Founded Institution

As Benedict College celebrates over 152 years of history, Artis’ leadership marks a significant milestone for the institution. Founded in 1870 by Bathsheba A. Benedict, the college will continue its legacy as a woman-led institution under Artis’ guidance.

The chairman of Benedict’s Board of Trustees, Charlie W. Johnson, expressed the board’s pride in Artis’ leadership, stating, “President Artis is keenly aware of the current issues students face, and she has demonstrated a deep commitment to providing students with formative learning experiences that prepare them to lead and succeed professionally and personally.”

Artis’ Commitment to Advancing Benedict’s Legacy

With this contract extension, Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis is poised to cement her legacy as a transformative leader for Benedict College. Her unwavering dedication to the institution’s mission and her bold vision for its future have positioned the HBCU for continued success.

As Artis stated, “The DNA of Benedict College is what makes all the difference.” By remaining true to the college’s rich history and embracing a forward-thinking approach, Artis aims to elevate Benedict’s standing among HBCUs and ensure its students are equipped to thrive in the years to come.
