Heidelberg University’s Patricia Adams Lecture Series (PALS) has announced an exciting keynote speaker for the 2024-25 school year.
Vernice Armour, known as “FlyGirl,” will share her inspiring story on September 26. Armour, America’s first Black female combat pilot, brings a wealth of experience and achievements to the event.
Trailblazing Military Career and Beyond
Armour’s military service includes two tours in Iraq as a Marine. She also served as a diversity liaison to the Pentagon for Headquarters Marine Corps. Her groundbreaking achievements extend beyond the military. Armour was the first woman of color on the Nashville Police Department Motorcycle Squad.
After her military service, Armour transitioned to the private sector. She became an entrepreneur, business consultant, and author. Her book, “Zero to Breakthrough,” outlines a seven-step method for achieving important goals.
Inspiring the Next Generation
During her visit, Armour will engage with students in several sessions. She will then deliver her keynote address at the PALS dinner. Angie Gilles, associate director of communication at Heidelberg, explains why Armour was chosen:
“She was at the top of her class in the military and accomplished a lot of firsts for women. I think our students will relate to her grit, courage, perseverance, and determination.”
Armour’s dynamic speaking style is expected to resonate with the audience. Her experiences as a Black gay woman and single mom add depth to her perspective.
Achievements and Recognition
Armour’s accomplishments have earned her numerous awards. She has received honors for her role in promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Her story has been featured on major media outlets including CNN, MSNBC, and Oprah Winfrey.
Outside her professional life, Armour is a running back for the San Diego Sunfire professional women’s football team. She is also a two-time title holder of Camp Pendleton’s Strongest Warrior Competition.
The Patricia Adams Lecture Series Legacy
This year’s PALS event marks a transition in leadership. Sherry Adams, daughter of Patricia and John Q. Adams, will represent the family. Both Patricia and John passed away recently, making this the first PALS event without them.
The lecture series, launched in 2010, aims to present exceptional female leaders to Heidelberg students. It was created to honor Patricia Adams’ loyalty to Heidelberg and her philanthropic spirit.
Looking Forward to an Inspiring Event
Armour’s visit promises to be a highlight of Heidelberg’s academic year. Her unique experiences and achievements align perfectly with PALS’ mission. Students and faculty alike are eagerly anticipating the insights and inspiration Armour will bring to campus.
