Middletown PD Welcomes Earl Nelson as First Black Police Chief

Earl Nelson to Become Middletown’s First Black Police Chief, Bringing 19 Years of Experience to Historic Role

Middletown, Ohio, is set to make history as Deputy Chief Earl Nelson has been recommended as the city’s new police chief. If formally approved, Nelson will become the first Black police chief in Middletown’s history.

Breaking Barriers: Earl Nelson’s Historic Appointment as Middletown’s Police Chief

Earl Nelson, a 19-year veteran of the Middletown Division of Police, was announced as the top pick after a rigorous testing and interview process. This recommendation comes as one of City Manager Paul Lolli’s final acts before his retirement.

Lolli praised Nelson’s qualifications, stating, “The role of police chief requires consummate professionalism and model dedication in the office and in the community, both of which Deputy Chief Nelson exemplifies every day.” Nelson’s appointment is pending formal approval by the city council on August 6.

From First Black Sergeant to Chief: Nelson’s Impressive Career Trajectory

Nelson’s journey to this historic position is marked by several milestone achievements. In 2017, he became Middletown’s first Black sergeant, paving the way for greater diversity in the department’s leadership.

Expressing his gratitude, Nelson said, “It’s an honor to be selected for this position. I want to thank everyone for their support and encouragement.” He acknowledged the competitive nature of the selection process, praising his fellow candidates as exceptional leaders.

Stability and Progress: Nelson’s Appointment Follows Period of Transition

Nelson’s recommendation comes after a period of transition for the Middletown Division of Police. Since December, the department has been led by two acting chiefs following the departure of former chief David Birk.

Deputy Chief Eric Crank served as acting chief until his retirement in April, followed by Deputy Chief Andy Warrick. Nelson’s appointment, if approved, promises to bring stability and fresh leadership to the department.

Competitive Selection Process: Nelson Emerges as Top Candidate

The selection process for the new chief was highly competitive. Deputy chiefs Malcolm Tipton and Andy Warrick, along with Nelson, all underwent civil service testing and evaluation for the position.

Tipton, who joined the force in 2008, and Warrick, a member since 2001, both have impressive career trajectories within the department. Their participation underscores the depth of talent within Middletown’s police force.
