Demetrius Latham Attains History as First Black Officer in Clarksville Police Department

Clarksville, Indiana made history as Demetrius Latham became the first Black officer to join the Clarksville Police Department.

This groundbreaking event marks a significant milestone for the southern Indiana city of 21,000 residents.

Historic Swearing-In Ceremony: Clarksville Welcomes Diversity to Police Force

During the Clarksville Town Council meeting, Latham was sworn in alongside fellow officers John Smith and Christopher Bartley. The ceremony held special significance for the community and the police department.

Councilman Tim Hauber emphasized the importance of this moment, stating, “This is a historic day for Clarksville. Demetrius Latham is our first Black police officer to ever put on the Clarksville uniform and I think that’s historic, and I’m proud of Clarksville.”

Breaking Barriers: Latham’s Appointment Addresses Racial Disparities in Law Enforcement

Latham’s appointment comes at a crucial time when race in police departments has become a national hot topic. Clarksville’s population is 81.1% white and 4.9% Black, reflecting wider disparities in many police forces across the country.

According to a U.S. Department of Justice survey, the percentage of Blacks in U.S. police departments has remained stagnant since 2007. Latham’s appointment represents a step towards addressing this imbalance in Clarksville.

A Long-Awaited Change: Chief Palmer’s Mission for Diversity

Clarksville Police Chief Mark Palmer expressed his satisfaction with this development. Throughout his 26-year career, he had been frequently questioned about the absence of Black officers in the department.

Palmer stated, “I think it shows a change not only in the police department, but it shows a change in the community. We’ve had a need for this for a long time. The community has wanted it and the police department is now able to provide it.”

Latham’s Vision: Aspiring for Leadership in Law Enforcement

Demetrius Latham brings not only diversity but also ambition to the Clarksville Police Department. Recently completing graduate school, Latham has set his sights on further career advancement.

In an interview with WDRB, Latham shared, “My ultimate goal is to actually become the chief of police of a department. I am actually going to begin working on my doctorate next year, after the academy.”
