Coco Gauff, the reigning US Open champion and world No. 2 tennis player, has achieved a historic milestone by being named Team USA’s female flag bearer for the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony. Gauff will join LeBron James, Team USA’s male flag bearer, in leading the American delegation during a groundbreaking ceremony held along the River Seine.
A Landmark Achievement for U.S. Tennis
At just 20 years old, Coco Gauff becomes the first U.S. tennis player to serve as a flag bearer for Team USA. This honor highlights her exceptional career and rising influence in the sport. “I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the Opening Ceremony,” Gauff said.
Her selection marks a significant moment, especially as she prepares to make her Olympic debut in Paris. Gauff missed the Tokyo 2020 Games due to a positive Covid-19 test, adding extra significance to her role this time around.
Paris 2024’s Unique Opening Ceremony
The Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony will be a departure from tradition. Unlike previous years, the Parade of Nations will feature athletes traveling by boat through Paris’s city center, rather than walking into a stadium. The ceremony will start at 1:30 p.m. ET and be broadcast on NBC.
“I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is – at a moment where we can bring athletes and fans together from around the world,” Gauff shared.
Gauff’s Role in the Games
In addition to her flag-bearing role, Gauff will compete in the tennis events at Roland Garros, starting Saturday. She will team up with Jessica Pegula in the doubles event, looking to make a strong impression on the court.
This Olympic appearance is not only a personal achievement for Gauff but also a milestone for U.S. tennis, showcasing the sport’s prominence on the global stage.
