In a historic ceremony at the Mills E. Godwin Courts Complex, David D. Miles was sworn in as Suffolk’s first Black Sheriff on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. This landmark event marks a significant milestone for the city of Suffolk and its law enforcement community.

Breaking Barriers: A Historic Moment for Suffolk

Miles’ appointment represents a watershed moment in Suffolk’s history. As the city’s first Black Sheriff, he embodies progress and inclusivity in local law enforcement. His emotional speech reflected the gravity of the occasion.

“This day is 50 years in the making, and it is a historic moment, not only for myself…but for many others in the City of Suffolk,” Miles declared after taking his oath of office. He acknowledged the foundation laid by his predecessors, Sheriffs Baines, Issacs, and Harris.

A Career Dedicated to Law Enforcement

Miles brings over 18 years of law enforcement experience to his new role. An honor graduate of Norfolk State University, he began his career in 2006 at the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office. In 2015, Miles joined the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office and was appointed Chief Deputy in 2019.

His promotion to Sheriff is a testament to his dedication and leadership within the department. Miles’ journey from deputy to Sheriff exemplifies the potential for growth and advancement in law enforcement careers.

Vision for a United and Responsive Sheriff’s Office

In his first address as Sheriff, Miles outlined his vision for the department. He emphasized the importance of being representative of and responsive to Suffolk’s diverse communities. Miles aims to bridge the gap between law enforcement and citizens.

“I envision this office as being both representative of and responsive to the citizens that we serve,” Miles stated. He plans to build upon existing relationships and create new ones, fostering trust between the Sheriff’s Office and the community.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

Miles highlighted the department’s commitment to community engagement. He announced the upcoming second annual Senior Expo, scheduled for September 14th, as an example of their outreach efforts. This event underscores the Sheriff’s Office’s dedication to serving all segments of Suffolk’s population.

The new Sheriff also acknowledged Suffolk’s growth, having recently surpassed 100,000 residents. Miles expressed excitement about being part of the city’s next phase of development, promising to ensure safety and protect citizens’ rights.

A Diverse Leadership Team

The swearing-in ceremony also saw the promotion of five additional Suffolk Sheriff’s Department members. Notably, Lt. Reva E. Brinkley made history as the office’s first Black female lieutenant.
