Breaking Barriers in Quantity Surveying
The Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS) has made history with its latest presidential appointment. Mosha Senyolo has been elected as the organization’s new president, becoming the first black woman to lead this esteemed institution.
Senyolo’s election marks a significant milestone for ASAQS and the quantity surveying profession in South Africa. Her appointment reflects the changing face of leadership in the construction and built environment sectors.
“Becoming the first black woman president of such a globally respected organisation was never something I aimed for personally,” Senyolo stated. She expressed her deep honor and gratitude for this achievement.
A Journey of Preparation and Insight
Senyolo’s path to the presidency began in 2021 when she was appointed junior vice-president of ASAQS. This role provided her with crucial insights into the organization’s operations and challenges.
“I had the opportunity to closely observe the responsibilities of senior leadership within our organisation,” Senyolo explained. She gained a comprehensive understanding of ASAQS’s strategic direction during this time.
This preparatory period has equipped Senyolo with the knowledge and experience necessary to lead ASAQS effectively. Her tenure as junior vice-president has laid a solid foundation for her presidency.
Vision for Innovation and Member Engagement
As she steps into her new role, Senyolo has outlined clear objectives for her presidency. She aims to build upon ASAQS’s legacy while implementing necessary changes to drive the organization forward.
“I aim to prioritise turning innovative ideas into tangible, measurable achievements,” Senyolo declared. Her focus will be on enhancing member engagement and satisfaction through tailored programs and communication strategies.
Senyolo envisions fostering a culture of continuous improvement within ASAQS. She believes every initiative should contribute to the collective success and advancement of the quantity surveying profession.
Inspiration and Patriotism: Driving Forces
Behind Senyolo’s dedication to ASAQS lies a deep sense of patriotism. This value, she says, drives her in both her personal and professional life.
Senyolo draws inspiration from her father, Thabo Senyolo, noted as the first black-qualified quantity surveyor by Wits University. His pioneering spirit has clearly influenced her own trailblazing path.
“Patriotism, in my lived experience, embodies a belief in something greater than oneself,” Senyolo reflected. She finds motivation in fellow South Africans who passionately represent both their professions and their nation.
