Dr. Valerie McCray Indiana Senate nominee

Dr. Valerie McCray Makes History as Indiana’s First Black Woman U.S. Senate Nominee, Vows to Drive Change

Trailblazing Psychologist Secures Democratic Nomination

Dr. Valerie McCray has shattered barriers by becoming Indiana’s first Black woman nominee for a U.S. Senate seat. The 65-year-old psychologist secured the Democratic nomination in May 2024 with an impressive 65% of the statewide vote.

“The fact that I can claim victory in the primary says one thing: the people of Indiana are ready for someone who understands their struggles,” McCray declared. She aims to fight for mental health care, livable wages, and reproductive rights.

Despite trailing in polls, McCray remains determined to “keep pushing” forward. Her historic nomination signals a potential shift in Indiana’s political landscape.

From Psychology to Politics: A Path to Washington

With 35 years of experience in psychology, McCray brings a unique perspective to her Senate bid. Her work with U.S. veterans suffering from PTSD sparked her interest in addressing systemic issues at the federal level.

“It was a matter of, do I continue to keep feeling as if I am just not enough to go around, or do I go to Washington, D.C.,” McCray explained. She aims to change gun laws, healthcare policies, and wage structures.

McCray’s campaign focuses on milestones yet to be achieved. Her son, Ryan Ely, believes this approach could set her apart from competitors.

Facing Challenges: The Road to Election Day

McCray acknowledges the uphill battle she faces against Republican Congressman Jim Banks. Polls from The Hill show Banks with a 97% chance of winning Indiana’s Senate seat.

However, McCray remains undeterred. “Defeating Jim Banks will be a huge mountain to climb,” she admitted. “It will take more money, more hard work and more volunteers than ever before.”

This perseverance is evident in her campaign journey. After falling short in 2022, McCray successfully gathered the required 4,500 signatures “with time to spare” for her 2024 bid.

Key Issues and Endorsements

McCray’s platform addresses pressing concerns such as immigration, abortion rights, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She champions mental and reproductive healthcare, positioning herself as an advocate for women’s issues.

Indiana Democratic Party Chair Mike Schmuhl has endorsed McCray, calling her a “lifelong champion.” He highlighted her commitment to codifying Roe v. Wade and protecting women’s healthcare at the federal level.

Schmuhl emphasized McCray’s potential as a problem-solver, stating, “She will be a voice for solutions as Indiana’s next senator.” He praised her willingness to work across the aisle on issues like addiction, immigration reform, and job creation.
