Pioneering African-American Entrepreneurship in the Auto Industry
In 1974, Robert P. Ross Sr. established the Bob Ross Auto Group Buick dealership in Richmond, Indiana. This groundbreaking venture marked the first automobile dealership owned by an African-American in the country.
Five years later, Ross relocated his family and business to Centerville, Ohio. The dealership has thrived there for five decades, overcoming challenges and setting new benchmarks in the industry.
Jenell Ross: Continuing a Groundbreaking Legacy
Following her father’s passing in 1997, Jenell Ross took the helm of Bob Ross Auto. She now holds the distinction of being the only second-generation African-American woman auto dealer owner in the United States.
“I still consider it not filling shoes, but filling big boots in regards to all of the firsts that he achieved in the auto industry and beyond,” Jenell Ross reflects. Her leadership has been instrumental in maintaining the dealership’s success and community standing.
Building Success Through People and Community
Bob Ross Sr. emphasized the importance of surrounding himself with great people. This philosophy continues to drive the dealership’s success today.
“The one thing he always talked about was people,” Jenell Ross shares. “You have to have great people as part of your team.” The dealership now employs nearly 90 people, contributing to its ongoing success.
50 Years of Community Support and Service
Bob Ross Auto attributes its longevity to the unwavering support of the Centerville community.
The dealership has become a fixture in the area, known for its commitment to quality service.
