During the 2021-22 Budget negotiations, Heastie secured significant funding for pandemic recovery. This included $800 million for small business recovery and $2.1 billion for an Excluded Worker Fund.
Education: From Pre-K to Higher Education
Heastie, a product of New York City’s public schools, has been a staunch advocate for education. Since 2015, his efforts have secured over $7.3 billion in additional school aid funding.
He championed the “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative, making New York the first state to adopt this program. It aims to improve outcomes for boys and young men of color.
Criminal Justice Reform: Leading the Charge
Under Heastie’s leadership, New York has implemented significant criminal justice reforms. These include raising the age of adult criminal responsibility and eliminating cash bail for most non-violent offenses.
In 2021, Heastie led the passage of the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act. This landmark legislation legalized adult-use marijuana and aims to provide justice for communities disproportionately impacted by drug laws.

Heastie has taken bold steps to address climate change. In 2019, he led the passage of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.
