Dr. Miller, IU Kokomo’s first Black full-time faculty member, left an indelible mark on the institution.

Dr. Miller joined IU Kokomo’s faculty in 1960. He quickly became a beacon of inclusivity and global awareness. His journey began with a degree in European languages from Butler University.
After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Miller pursued graduate studies at IU. He then embarked on a remarkable career at IU Kokomo. Miller held various leadership positions, including acting chancellor.
Multicultural Champion: Creating Inclusive Spaces
The newly renovated MCC lobby now bears Dr. Miller’s name. It houses a large portrait of the professor emeritus. The space also showcases the Dr. Herbert Miller Special Collection.
Andréa Halpin, dean of students, praised Miller’s impact. “He was very inclusive, always connecting folks,” she said. Halpin emphasized that Miller’s legacy will continue through the MCC’s work.

Dr. Miller’s expertise spanned an impressive nine languages. He taught multiple foreign languages and international business classes. His linguistic prowess reflected his commitment to global understanding.

Kokomo Mayor Tyler Moore shared memories of Miller’s influence. His impact reached far beyond the university campus. Miller welcomed people from all backgrounds into his classroom, home, and community.
Miller’s nephew, Andre Vaughn, and niece, Norma Johnson, offered family perspectives. They reflected on the importance of the MCC. Their insights underscored Miller’s far-reaching influence.
