William Pickard, First Black McDonald’s Franchise Owner, Entrepreneur, and Philanthropist, Leaves Enduring Legacy at 83

William Pickard, a trailblazing entrepreneur and philanthropist, left an indelible mark on the business world and the African American community.

At the age of 83, Pickard passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at his West Palm Beach, Florida home, surrounded by loved ones.

Pickard etched his name in history in 1971 when he became one of the first Black franchise owners of a McDonald’s restaurant in Detroit, paving the way for countless others to follow his footsteps.

Diversified Business Interests

Beyond his groundbreaking achievement with McDonald’s, Pickard’s business acumen extended to various industries. He co-founded the Global Automotive Alliance (GAA) Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management, a company that has generated over $5 billion in sales since its inception in 1989.

Additionally, Pickard was a co-managing partner of the MGM Grand Detroit Casino, further showcasing his diverse entrepreneurial spirit.

Amplifying Black Voices through Media

Recognizing the importance of representation, Pickard played a pivotal role in establishing Real Times Media in 2003. This media group now owns the Michigan Chronicle and other African American newspapers, ensuring that the voices and stories of the Black community are amplified and heard.

“It is with immense sorrow that we share the news that our beloved William ‘Bill’ F. Pickard, PhD — entrepreneur, philanthropist, education advocate, business titan, mentor, and visionary — passed away peacefully,” his family said in a statement.

Philanthropic Efforts and Legacy

Pickard’s impact extended far beyond the realm of business. He donated millions of dollars to various organizations, with a strong focus on investing in the Black community.

His philanthropic efforts supported institutions such as Western Michigan University, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Motown Historical Museum, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., among others.

In 2019, Pickard’s lifelong contributions were recognized with the prestigious “The Michigan Lifetime Humanitarian Award.”
