Felicia Barnes Breaks Barriers as Fairfax County’s First Black Female Battalion Chief

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department has made history with the appointment of Felicia Barnes as its first Black female battalion chief. Barnes, a native of Fairfax County and a graduate of Mount Vernon High School, has shattered glass ceilings through her remarkable journey within the department.

“I am so honored to be the first Black female battalion chief,” said Battalion Chief Felicia Barnes.

Her ascension to this prestigious role is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and the unwavering support of her colleagues throughout her career.

An Unexpected Path

Barnes’ path to the fire service was an unexpected one. Initially pursuing a career in law enforcement, she served as a Fairfax County Police officer before her interest in firefighting was piqued during her interactions with firefighters on calls.

“I never thought that Fire and Rescue was even an option or a thought process in my head. I wanted to go off and do some kind of federal government, federal agency type thing,” Barnes recalled.

Intrigued by the camaraderie and sense of purpose within the fire department, she took a leap of faith and joined the ranks of Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, a decision that would shape her life’s trajectory.

A Dedicated Mentor and Role Model

Throughout her journey, Barnes has been driven by a desire to inspire others and lead by example. Her colleagues played a pivotal role in her success, offering guidance, training, and unwavering belief in her abilities.

“There were people that just believed in me. And it did, it really did empower me,” she expressed.

As a trailblazer, Barnes hopes to encourage others, especially Black women and girls, to pursue their dreams fearlessly and overcome any obstacles in their path.

Breaking Barriers, Serving the Community

Barnes’ appointment as the first Black female battalion chief in Fairfax County Fire and Rescue is a testament to the department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Her remarkable achievement not only breaks barriers but also serves as an inspiration to future generations of firefighters.

“Just be strong, be courageous, go after what it is that you want to do and don’t take no for an answer. Keep going,” Barnes advised.
