A Journey of Resilience and Passion
Chef Lakisha’s path to culinary excellence was paved with challenges and resilience. Born and raised in Muskegon, she overcame childhood obesity and societal rejection, ultimately leaving corporate America to pursue her true passion – food.
“I left a guaranteed income behind and began to put my soul out there, and from that has been the evolution of SoulFill,” she shared, reflecting on her transformative journey.
Redefining Soul Food with Love and Healing
Chef Lakisha’s approach to soul food is a testament to her commitment to nourishing bodies and souls. “80% of the experience is my food, 20% is how I treat you,” she explained, emphasizing the nostalgic and comforting essence of her culinary creations.
“They can say whatever, but they can’t say it wasn’t made with love,” she added, underscoring the love and healing she infuses into every dish.
Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Change
Chef Lakisha’s historic presentation at the ACF convention represents a significant milestone for diversity and inclusion within the culinary world. As the first Black woman to grace the stage with a soul food presentation, she is paving the way for future generations of culinary artists.
“To be the first speaks volumes that great things come out of Muskegon, greater things come out of West Michigan, but something great came out of the inside of me because I turned my pain into a purpose,” she shared, reflecting on the profound significance of her achievement.
A Culinary Destination in the Making
Looking ahead, Chef Lakisha’s vision for Muskegon is nothing short of ambitious. With the upcoming opening of “The Baller,” a collective featuring soul food and Asian cuisine in downtown Muskegon, she aims to transform the city into a culinary destination for the world.
“Muskegon is becoming a culinary destination for the world, and I’m here for that,” she proclaimed, brimming with excitement and determination.
As Chef Lakisha takes center stage at the ACF 2024 convention, her trailblazing spirit and culinary prowess are poised to inspire and delight audiences worldwide.
