Trailblazing Leadership in Reading
In a momentous occasion, Reading Borough Council witnessed a historic milestone as Councillor Glenn Dennis (Labour, Kentwood) was sworn in as the town’s first Black Mayor.
The annual general meeting on Wednesday, May 22, marked a significant step towards diversity and representation in local governance.
“As the first ever black mayor of this borough, I stand here with immense pride,” Councillor Dennis expressed during his inaugural speech.
A Journey of Dedication and Resilience
Councillor Dennis’ path to the mayoral office has been one of unwavering commitment and perseverance. Previously serving twice as deputy mayor, his ascension to the top role was celebrated by his colleagues, who praised his dedication and approachable demeanor.
In an emotional moment, Councillor Dennis paid tribute to his late wife, Colette, acknowledging her presence and the profound impact she had on his life. Despite facing personal loss, he demonstrated remarkable resilience, continuing to serve his constituents with compassion and determination.

As he takes on the mantle of mayor, Councillor Dennis pledged to represent all residents of Reading, embracing the town’s rich diversity.
He announced Reading Community Learning Centre and Reading Prostate Cancer Support Group as his Mayor’s charities, reflecting his commitment to education and community well-being.
The historic swearing-in ceremony was marked by joyous celebrations, including musical performances by Julia and Luke, who played “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” and Jeffrey Hinds, who sang a special “Mayor’s Calypso” song. The occasion resonated with attendees, recognizing the significance of Councillor Dennis’ achievement as a trailblazer for representation in local government.
