In a landmark move, the Erwin Police Department, which was established in 1891, has hired Roger Antone as its first Black officer in its 133-year history.
This groundbreaking appointment marks a significant milestone in the department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
A Trailblazer’s Journey: Paving the Way for Change
Antone, who previously served as the first Black K9 officer in Bluff City, is no stranger to breaking barriers. However, he is determined to be remembered for more than just these firsts.
“I’m trying to make my own path and prove to my kids and the younger generation and anyone else that you have to create your own path and walk by faith,” Antone said, echoing the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Overcoming Adversity: A Message of Perseverance
Antone’s journey has been marked by ups and downs, but he remains steadfast in his determination to inspire others. He emphasizes the importance of resilience and perseverance, offering invaluable advice to the youth.
“Your path to success is not going to be straight. You’re going to have bumps and curves and hula loops, but stay on the right path and keep your mind focused, and no matter who or what tells you no, don’t take no for an answer,” Antone says.
A Warm Welcome and High Praise
Just six weeks into his new role, Antone has already made a positive impact. Chief Regan Tilson praised Antone’s performance, stating, “He’s done a phenomenal job. He’s a good cop, and that’s what we need.”
Antone, one of 17 officers in Erwin, expressed his enthusiasm for his new position, saying, “I love it. I’m glad I made the move over here.”
