Trailblazing Achievement in Religious Leadership
In a historic moment, Bishop Tracy S. Malone has become the first Black woman to ascend to the pinnacle of leadership in the United Methodist Church (UMC).
Before nearly 800 delegates and observers, Malone took the mantle as the new president of the Council of Bishops (COB), the highest governing body of the global denomination.
Momentous Occasion and Powerful Message
Malone accepted the gavel from outgoing President Bishop Thomas Bickerton to a standing ovation at the General Conference of The United Methodist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.
This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone in the UMC’s efforts towards diversity and inclusion.
“I am honored to serve as the President of the Council of Bishops in the midst of these challenging and hope-filled times in the life of our beloved United Methodist Church,” Malone said. “Fresh winds of God’s spirit are moving across the Church and creating missional pathways for the next visible expression and witness of The United Methodist Church.”
Unwavering Commitment and Vision for the Future
Elected as president during the COB meeting at Lake Junaluska in November 2023, Malone will lead the council for two years. Her appointment signifies the UMC’s recognition of her exceptional leadership abilities and commitment to the church’s mission.
“I stand here tonight hope-full, encouraged, grateful, and excitedly expectant for what God will do through my leadership and through our leadership together as we trust in God’s provisions for the now and the emerging next expression of The United Methodist Church,” Malone said upon receiving the gavel.
With an “unshakable confidence” in the council’s ability to lead the “whole church,” Malone vows to bring her entire being, gifts, wisdom, and experience to her role as president.
Paving the Way for Inclusivity and Progress
Malone’s historic achievement represents a significant step forward for the UMC in promoting diversity and inclusivity within its leadership ranks.
As the first Black female president, she paves the way for future generations of women and people of color to aspire to leadership roles within the church.
The United Methodist Church has taken a monumental stride towards progress, embracing the richness of diversity and recognizing the invaluable contributions of all its members, regardless of gender or race.
