In a groundbreaking moment, Demiesha Dennis put her name into the annals of history by becoming the first Black woman to sit on the board of the Friends of Algonquin Park.
As the founder and director of Brown Girl Outdoor World (BGOW), Demiesha has been actively working to change narratives related to inclusion, belonging, and safety in outdoor spaces for diverse, historically excluded communities.

Breaking Barriers in Outdoor Recreation
Based in Toronto, Canada, Demiesha’s appointment to the Friends of Algonquin Park board of directors marks a significant milestone in promoting diversity and representation within the outdoor recreation industry.
In addition to her role on the board, Demiesha also serves on the Advisory Committee on Fisheries and Aquatic Ecosystem Management Plan for Algonquin Provincial Park. As an avid fly angler, she seizes meaningful opportunities to introduce and engage new participants in the sport.
