Trailblazing Politician Breaking Barriers
Suzy Hansen, a proud descendant of the historic Africville community, made history by becoming the first Black woman elected as the MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) for the Halifax Needham riding in August 2021.
Her groundbreaking victory shattered barriers and paved the way for greater representation in Nova Scotia’s political landscape.
“Being in this role as a woman, but as well being a Black woman, there’s not very many of me that are there that I can lean on,” Hansen shared.
Advocating for Her Community
Raised in the North End of Halifax, Hansen has been a passionate advocate for her community.
Prior to her political career, she served on the Halifax Regional School Board for District 5, where she championed the needs of students and schools.
Her dedication to empowering her constituents has been unwavering.
Multitalented Artist and Performer
Beyond her political achievements, Suzy Hansen is a multitalented artist and performer.
She has graced stages alongside renowned artists such as Lionel Richie, Natalie Cole, Babyface, and Jully Black, showcasing her soulful voice.
Hansen’s artistic pursuits extend to theatre and film, with credits in stage productions at Neptune Theatre and on-screen roles with ATV/CTV and CBC television.
Inspiring Others to Embrace Their Potential
Hansen’s journey to becoming an MLA speaks to her belief in embracing one’s potential and stepping out on faith. As a mother of seven, she hopes to inspire others, particularly Black women, to pursue their dreams and be the best versions of themselves.
“Suzy believes that her steps have been Ordered by the most High, Suzy has been inspired and guided to do this work and hopes to encourage and inspire others to step out on faith and be the best version of themselves always in everything that you do.”
