Breaking Barriers: A Groundbreaking Promotion

The Des Moines Police Department has celebrated the promotion of Lillie Miller to the rank of captain, making her the first Black female to hold this position in the department’s history. This achievement comes after Miller’s 21 years of dedicated service to the community.

“This is huge for me, being a pioneer and a trailblazer is not only a great honor, but a great responsibility,” Miller said. “It’s about bringing others along who look like me that can be with me.”

A Momentous Occasion Celebrated by Many

Miller’s groundbreaking promotion was met with overwhelming support and joy from the community. Approximately 100 people gathered to witness her receive the captain’s badge, recognizing the significance of this moment for diversity and representation within the police force.

“I’m so delighted,” said Renee Hardman, a supporter of Miller. “I could just cry to see history in the making is phenomenal for this community and everyone around it.”

As the first Black female captain, Miller’s achievement held profound significance, serving as an inspiration for aspiring officers from underrepresented backgrounds.

Her promotion not only breaks down barriers but also makes the way for greater diversity and inclusivity within the ranks of law enforcement.

In her new role as captain, Miller’s duties will include overseeing operations and contributing to the training and development of employees.

Chief Dana Wingert emphasized the importance of this promotion, stating, “In our building, you have to earn it. You have to put in the hard work. You have to be committed.”

A Historic Day for the Des Moines Police Department

Miller’s promotion was part of a historic day for the Des Moines Police Department, which saw a record-breaking 18 officers promoted, collectively representing 357 years of law enforcement experience.

This milestone not only celebrates individual achievements but also highlights the department’s commitment to recognizing and advancing exceptional talent.
