Timothy Horton, Jr., a University of Utah alumnus with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, has his name in history as the first African American designer to collaborate with a professional hockey team.
His GRIZZ GANG collection, featuring varsity jackets, hoodies, and more, was created for the Utah Grizzlies in celebration of Black History Month.
Horton’s groundbreaking achievement not only represents a significant milestone in the fashion industry but also highlights the ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in the world of professional sports.
A Journey Fueled by Passion and Determination
Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Horton shared, “My dream and vision have always been wrapped around fashion since I was 13 years old, and becoming one of the biggest fashion designers has always been a huge goal of mine.” His unwavering determination and passion for fashion have been the driving forces behind his success.
“I told myself I would not let school or working for the Jazz stop my creativity, my drive, and my overall ambition towards becoming big-time.”
Horton’s journey began in 2016 while working for the Utah Jazz and pursuing his studies at the University of Utah. Despite the demands of his job and education, he remained steadfast in his commitment to his dream, refusing to let any obstacle stand in his way.
The Rise of KODA’FE: Keeping Dreams Alive
In 2017, Horton released his luxury streetwear brand, KODA’FE, to the public. The brand’s name is an acronym for “Keeping Our Dreams Alive For Eternity,” a testament to Horton’s unwavering dedication to realizing his aspirations.
What started as a passion project creating T-shirts quickly evolved into a flourishing fashion enterprise. Horton’s relentless hard work and dedication, spanning over three years, paved the way for his remarkable achievements.
Collaborations and Partnerships
Horton’s talent and unique designs have garnered the attention of numerous athletes and artists, leading to collaborations and partnerships that have further solidified his reputation in the fashion world.
In September 2022, a direct message on Instagram from the Utah Grizzlies about creating a Black History Night collection presented an opportunity that Horton could not refuse. He recognized the historical significance of becoming the first African American designer to collaborate with a professional hockey team.
Additionally, Horton has received offers to collaborate with the NBPA/NBA and Footlocker, further cementing his position as a trailblazer in the industry.
A Bright Future Ahead
With the successful launch of the GRIZZ GANG collection on February 4 and an upcoming personal collection with Footlocker expected to launch between April and May, Horton’s journey continues to reach new heights.
As he reflects on his incredible accomplishments, Horton remains excited about the future, stating, “This journey has been amazing, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
