Dr. Travis J. Bristol Elected The First African-American Chair Of NBPTS Board Of Directors

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has elected Dr. Travis J. Bristol as the new Chairman of its Board of Directors.

As the first African-American to serve in this role, Dr. Bristol will bring a critical and timely perspective to steering the organization into the future.

Outgoing Chair Dr. Terry Holliday received high praise for his six years of “invaluable” leadership. Incoming Chair Dr. Bristol has over 15 years of experience in education across teaching, research, and policy.

Blazing a Trail in Education Excellence

Prior to joining the NBPTS Board, Dr. Bristol served as a professor at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Education. He has also taught in New York City public schools and worked in teacher development programs.

With an illustrious career, Dr. Bristol has received over $5.8 million in research grants and numerous honors, including the American Educational Research Association’s Early Career Award.

He is a published expert on educational policy, teacher retention, professional learning communities, and issues of race and gender in school settings.

Committed to Increasing Accomplished, Diverse Teachers

As Board Chair, Dr. Bristol aims to boost access and support for teachers pursuing advanced National Board certification, particularly those working in high-needs communities.

“If we want to make national board certification relevant, we have to create the conditions for more teachers to become certified,” he remarked. This aligns with his dedication to nurturing a diverse teaching workforce.
