Singer-songwriter Victoria Monét etched her name in Grammys history on Sunday night, becoming the first female R&B artist to take home Best New Artist in over 20 years.
A Stunning Upset
The 34-year-old prevailed in a stacked category including Gracie Abrams, Latto, Tobe Nwigwe, and Wet Leg.
Her surprising win marks the first time a female R&B act has earned the honor since icon Alicia Keys back in 2002.
Monét released her breakthrough project “Jaguar II” last year, which spawned the viral hit “On My Mama.”
A Historic Night
During her emotional acceptance speech, a stunned Monét said:
“I just want to say to everybody who has a dream – I want you to look at this as an example…My roots have been growing underneath ground, unseen for so long. And I feel like today, I’m sprouting.”
In addition to Best New Artist, the R&B songstress also nabbed awards for Best R&B Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
Her seven nominations this year tied for second-most overall, an unprecedented feat for an R&B newcomer.
Her Moment
As a longtime songwriter for other artists, Monét has waited patiently in the wings for her turn in the spotlight.
She has written smash hits for Ariana Grande, Chloe x Halle and others – now her solo career has skyrocketed.
At the 2024 Grammys podium, Victoria Monét declared this chapter just the beginning of her moment. We can’t wait to see the R&B sensation continue to make history!
