From Humble Beginnings to Striking Gold
George Stiebel overcame incredible odds to become Jamaica’s first Black millionaire in the late 1800s. Born into humble beginnings, Stiebel ventured to Venezuela where he struck gold through prospecting. His ingenious decision to invest his earnings into gold mining operations catapulted Stiebel into the elite circles of 19th century Jamaican society.
Acquiring the Legendary Devon House Estate
In 1879, Stiebel purchased the Devon Penn property and rectory from the Church of England in Kingston. He demolished the existing structure to construct his pride and glory – the magnificent Devon House mansion which was completed in 1881.
Devon House immediately became a prominent landmark in Jamaica due to its grandeur and opulence. Stiebel earned recognition from Queen Victoria herself for his entrepreneurial prowess before his passing on June 29, 1896.
Inspiring Generations with His Resilience and Vision
On November 12, 2023, a bust of George Stiebel was unveiled at Devon House in honor of his trailblazing achievements. Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett praised Stiebel as “an emblem of resilience and determination” during the ceremony.
The inclusion of the bust signifies Stiebel’s pivotal influence in shaping Jamaican history. He overcame racial barriers and economic hardship to realize his dreams. As Minister Delroy Chuck stated, Stiebel’s journey should motivate Jamaicans to persevere despite adversity.
Even in contemporary times, George Stiebel’s rags-to-riches story continues inspiring youth that they can excel and achieve their full potential. His enduring legacy lives on at the beloved Devon House.
