The Remarkable Tale Of Malick Bodian And How He Made It As The First Black Model To Walk In The Givenchy Couture

Scouted in the Streets of Corsica

Senegalese model Malick Bodian was initially discovered at age 19 by a casting director, who spotted him on the street in Corsica. Though skeptical at first, Bodian was quickly signed and propelled into the competitive fashion world.

His first-ever runway show was with Valentino in 2018. “I was stressed before the show, but didn’t feel that way anymore once it was over,” Bodian reflected. After overcoming the nerves, the experience made clear he belonged on the catwalk.

Meteoric Rise on the Runway

Bodian’s modeling career rapidly took flight. By early 2019, he was walking over 20 shows a season. The standout was his history-making Givenchy Couture debut, making him the first black male model to walk for the luxury brand.

With his elegant stride and adaptability, Bodian has modeled for Dior Homme, Louis Vuitton, Ferragamo and appeared in campaigns for Boss and Valentino. When not traveling the globe for fashion gigs, he returns home to Dakar, Senegal.

Balancing Modeling with Artistic Passions

Initially modeling to fund his true passion – photography – Bodian has moved behind the lens working for Vogue, GQ, Bottega Veneta and shooting projects back in Africa. He documents his friends and family, contrasting fashion photography’s fantasy with intimate reality.

Despite tremendous success, if not modeling, Bodian maintains he’d likely be playing football somewhere. Beyond photography, he remains inspired by cinema and music. For this transcendent model, the present moment matters most.
