Long Island Fire Department Welcomes First Black Fire Commissioner

Rasheen “Roc” Williams Long Island Fire Department Welcomes First Black Fire Commissioner

Williams’ Barrier-Breaking Appointment

The Brentwood Fire Department on Long Island, NY has sworn in Rasheen “Roc” Williams as its first-ever African-American fire commissioner.

Williams, who is Black and Latino, was elected by the community to serve amongst the department’s leadership after dedicating decades as a firefighter himself.

Significance for A Diverse Community

Williams’ appointment carries special meaning for Brentwood, where over 85% of residents are Hispanic or Black.

The 125-year-old fire department had lacked any commissioners of color before Williams took office and community leaders have praised the milestone as an important step towards representation.

A Lifetime Of Service

Williams first developed a passion for firefighting after visiting his local firehouse on a dare as a teen. He studied the craft extensively before officially joining the department, where he was embraced by veteran leaders.

Though recent injuries ended his firefighting career, Williams stays committed to public service through his new commissioner role.

Fostering Unity And Inclusion

As both a dedicated family man and highly experienced first responder, Williams hopes his position will empower Brentwood’s diversity.

He aims to recruit more volunteers while sending a message that anyone in the community can achieve their goals through hard work.
