Dr Brian Williams Runs For Congress And Hopes To Become The First Black Medical Doctor With Voting Power On Capitol Hill

Dr. Brian Williams, a veteran and trauma surgeon working at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas, has announced his Democratic candidacy for Texas’s 32nd congressional district in 2024.

If elected, Dr. Williams would make history as the first trauma surgeon and first Black doctor serving in Congress with full voting privileges.

Background on Dr. Williams

Dr. Williams grew up in a military family, later attending the Air Force Academy himself and serving 6 years directing classified military programs.

He then pivoted his focus to medicine, completing his residency at Harvard and a fellowship at Emory University before moving to Dallas to work as a trauma surgeon.

In 2016, Dr. Williams led the Parkland Hospital trauma team that treated victims of the shooting ambush on Dallas police officers amidst downtown protests.

This pivotal night inspired Dr. Williams towards greater public service beyond medicine. He went on to serve on the Dallas Citizens Police Review Board, help open a Chicago trauma center, and work in DC healthcare policy.

Now seeking the open 2024 seat in Texas’ 32nd district, Dr. Williams aims to apply his frontline experience to tackling issues like gun violence, unaffordable healthcare, and attacks on reproductive rights from extremist Republicans. His personal encounters with these critical problems motivate his congressional run.

Plan for Congress

If elected as Texas’ first trauma surgeon representative, Dr. Williams plans to champion bold policies aimed at saving lives. As someone intimately familiar with gun violence carnage through his work in the ER, he will push for common-sense gun reform to curb the gun epidemic killing so many Americans.

Dr. Williams also witnessed firsthand how flawed policies block affordable, preventative healthcare for vulnerable groups. He’ll fight to expand healthcare access and coverage for all. And having operated on women facing death due to bans on reproductive healthcare, he’ll stand up for reproductive rights.

Closing Statement

Through his journey as a veteran, doctor, and community servant, Dr. Brian Williams acquired the courage and experience needed to drive life-saving change in Congress.

After seeing bad policies’ deadly impacts on his operating table, he’s determined to lay down his scalpel if it means picking up a megaphone in DC to advocate for patients and communities in need.
