Deshaun Foster has successfully turned his pandemic coffee passion into Kenosha County’s first ever Black-owned coffee shop – Blak Coffee. After years of dedication and community support, his humble barbershop pop-up now stands tall in a permanent downtown storefront.
Family Traditions to Pandemic Pastime
Coffee has always been integral to Foster’s family traditions. He fondly recalls his grandmother sneaking him cups of joe as a young boy.
When COVID-19 hit, the elementary teacher turned to coffee as his new daily ritual. Inspired by his newfound passion, Foster’s daughter suggested he open his own coffee shop during a trip to Dunkin’ Donuts.
Barbershop Beginnings
In early 2022, Foster launched Blak Coffee as a pop-up inside Regimen Barber Collective. Owner Alvin Owens, a longtime mentor to Foster, eagerly supported the idea and offered his space.
For a year, Foster tirelessly attended events and made connections while serving his community. As he built a loyal customer base, Owens and others urged him to envision a permanent store.
First Brick and Mortar Shop
With help from local leaders securing the location and grants, Foster’s dreams became reality in February 2023. Blak Coffee held its grand opening in downtown Kenosha during Black History Month.
The family-friendly shop proudly celebrates Black culture and Foster’s inspirations. His menu features drinks named for relatives, while photos of legends like Muhammad Ali grace the walls.
Through boundless effort and community goodwill, Foster manifested his goal. His triumph stands as inspiration – if he can succeed, anyone in Kenosha’s Black community can.
