How Abraham Buckner Made A Mark As The First Black Valedictorian With Distinction In His Illinois High School’s 15-Year History

Achieving New Heights Through Discipline and Drive

When Abraham Buckner delivered the valedictorian speech at St. Teresa High School’s graduation on May 13th, 2023, made history as the first-ever African-American student to hold this distinction in the school’s entire 156-year existence.

The Decatur, IL institution had its first Black valedictorian in Abraham – an achievement that still astonishes the humble teenager.

“I just feel grateful for the position I was in. It just helped me build myself up to try to stay disciplined,” he remarked.

Through cultivating self-discipline and embracing the support of his community, Abraham fulfilled his academic ambitions, earning an exceptional 4.86 GPA.

Following in the Footsteps of Inspiring Figures

For driven Abraham, inspirational figures like the late Kobe Bryant set an example when it comes to relentlessly striving for excellence.

“When Kobe died…that really pushed me to be like if I wanna go for something I gotta go for it,” explained Abraham.

He also patterns his scholastic curiosity after his father Brian, describing lively discussions they would have about books tapping into critical thinking. Abraham’s curiosity and perseverance continue as he heads to college.

Blazing a Trail for Future Generations

By emerging as St. Teresa’s first-ever Black valedictorian, Abraham Buckner has etched himself into the high school’s history – and set a powerful precedent.

“He worked hard for this. I’m excited for him, he’s a great kid and he’s done a lot for his class as well,” said St. Teresa Principal Larry Daly.

Beyond Abraham’s incredible personal achievement, his graduation milestone paves the way for more students of color to envision themselves in that valedictorian role. Through drive and discipline, Abraham claimed a victory 156 years in the making.
