The Brooklyn Children’s Museum (BCM) recently named Atiba T. Edwards as its new President and CEO – the first Black man to hold the position in the museum’s nearly 125-year history. Edwards has been with BCM since 2019 and previously served as its Chief Operating Officer.
Native Of St. Vincent Rose Through Finance Career
Edwards was born in St. Vincent and moved to Crown Heights, Brooklyn as a child. He has fond memories of visiting BCM regularly with his family growing up.
After attending the University of Michigan, Edwards began working in finance. He started as a fixed-income research analyst at JPMorgan’s Investment Bank focused on the automotive industry.
Edwards then moved to Nomura Securities where he covered various sectors in high-grade and high-yield fixed-income research. He later transitioned into education as Director of Operations at Brooklyn East Collegiate Middle School.
Led Successful Initiatives As Chief Operating Officer
As Chief Operating Officer since 2019, Edwards played a key role in BCM’s recent success. He deftly managed budgets, increased staff efficiency, and led a rebranding effort.
Edwards also spearheaded popular new offerings like the ArtRink exhibition, a mini golf course, and a state-of-the-art auditorium.
When previous museum CEO Stephanie Hill Wilchfort departed in August 2022, Edwards stepped in as Acting President and CEO. His performance convinced museum leadership he was the right choice for the permanent role.
Committed To Continuing Museum’s Legacy
“This institution holds a special place in the hearts of families and children in Brooklyn and beyond,” Edwards said. “I am committed to continuing the museum’s legacy of providing a dynamic and enriching educational experience for all.”
Edwards wants to ensure BCM remains a cultural pillar for years to come. As the museum nears its 125th anniversary in 2024, he aims to install a strong foundation for the next 125 years.
“Building upon that foundation of beautiful memories to ensure that many people across Brooklyn and across the city and even further know we are an institution that they should add to their list when they are in town,” Edwards told Brooklyn Paper.
Sign Of Progress For Black Leadership
Amanda Sue Nichols, Chair of BCM’s Board of Trustees, expressed confidence Edwards will successfully lead the museum going forward.
As a native Brooklynite, Edwards also takes pride in stepping up as a Black leader for his local community. He wants to reconnect residents with BCM and reinforce that all are welcome there.
Edwards’ groundbreaking appointment comes as more Black Americans have recently assumed prominent leadership positions across various high-profile New York City institutions.
Overseeing Pivotal Next Chapter
The world-renowned Brooklyn Children’s Museum serves over 300,000 youth and families annually. Its interactive exhibits and programs span science, arts, music, culture, and performance.
As only the 12th President in the museum’s storied history, Atiba Edwards will steward BCM’s mission into an increasingly dynamic future. After playing there frequently as a child, his journey now continues full circle back to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum.
