Wilfried Nancy Becomes The First Black Coach To Win MLS Cup In League History

Wilfried Nancy made Major League Soccer history on December 10th by becoming the first Black head coach to win the MLS Cup. His Columbus Crew defeated Los Angeles FC 2-1 to capture the league’s most coveted prize.

Nancy took charge of the Crew in 2022 after serving as head coach for CF Montreal the previous two seasons. His bold tactical approach quickly transformed Columbus into championship contenders.

Implementing Attacking Philosophy

Despite having never played or coached in MLS prior to last year, the French-born Nancy left his mark from the outset. He instilled an aggressive, possession-based style that saw Columbus climb from 11th to 3rd in the Eastern Conference standings.

The team racked up 16 wins while scoring the 6th most goals in the league’s 28th season. Though LAFC entered as favorites, Nancy’s side executed their trademark aggression to hoist the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy.

Breaking Barriers

While Nancy celebrated making history, he noted the lack of Black representation in head coaching circles. At present, he remains MLS’s only Black manager.

“I’m proud to represent, yes, to be the only Black. But I’m not happy with that,” Nancy emphasized. “This is something that has to change.”

The Frenchman applauded MLS’s existing diversity initiatives. However, he stressed that the issue stretches beyond North American soccer into the global game.

As an inspirational champion, Nancy hopes to motivate broader progress. But for now, he can revel in leading Columbus to its first MLS Cup since 2020.
